This clay class covers everything necessary for your badge(s). Scouts are expected to visit a ceramic/pottery studio, create from clay using pinch pot, coil, and we also incorporate slab into each project. Scouts are also asked to decorate (paint) a ceramic piece which will be covered in this one all inclusive project when they underglaze their wet clay creation. There is no need to return to paint your ceramic piece after it is fired as we use underglazes which can be applied to the wet clay. After air drying and our first firing we will dip each project in overglaze (giving a protective shine coating) and fire again. Our one day class has proven much more successful.
*Positive Thought Jar: Positive thoughts are powerful. We have created this offering because we feel that it is so empowering to understand that if you change your thoughts you can change your life. It is that simple. Each student will create a closed ball from a pinch pot leaving an opening in the top. They will add a neck cut from a slab of clay. We will talk with them about the power of positive thinking and have them pick ONE positive word to stamp on the front of their jar where they will see that word each day. This will be their daily reminder. They may decorate their vessel any way they like using coils, press molds, or even turn the jar into a Minion! (We had one of these recently, pretty awesome!) We pass around slips of paper once the vessel is complete and direct each student to write a negative thought that they would like to get rid of. This is not for anyone else to see. They fold up the word or phrase and place the paper in the wet clay vessel. We explain that when we fire their piece, that negative thought inside will burn away, and the positive word on the outside will stay. This process with parental supervision may be repeated at home using a small piece of paper and a match.
*For groups less than 8 we charge an additional $75 instructor fee
